I saw a lot of people buying herbs at the farmer’s market today. After a winter of making do with dried herbs or the bay, mint, rosemary, and thyme that easily survive our mild Carolina winters, I’m eager to get my herbs planted.
My advice is to wait at least two to three more weeks before you plant your non-hardy herbs outside. I think it’s fine to buy a few plants now, but please keep them inside by a sunny window. I’ve often ignored my own rule about not planting basil outside until at least April 15th and I’ve lost many a lovely plant because of my impatience.
Today, I bought genoa basil, thai basil, and dill plants, and am looking to using their fragrant leaves in my cooking this weekend. But even if the weather warms tomorrow, I will take my own good advice and enjoy having them in my sunny kitchen window for a few more weeks.
