Gardein BBQ Pulled Shreds – How to Improve Them

Date: August 29, 2013 / By Nancy Olah

I love trying new products that seek to expand the horizons of plant based protein. Since my carnivores live in the South, the idea of BBQ is always appealing.

My hubby and I tried Gardein’s BBQ pulled shreds tonight and liked them . . . but think they could be better with one simple change. The sauce is tasty, but if this product is trying to replicate the “shreds” that one gets with a true pork or beef BBQ, then all the pieces need to actually be shredded. Unlike the pretty picture to the left which shows lots of shreds, only about 30% of the product in our package was actually shredded – a lot of it was in fairly good sized chunks, which were a whole lot less appetizing than the shredded portion.

So, here is my hot tip.  if you decide to try this product, don’t microwave it (which was the supposed “preferred method.”) Instead, take it out of the plastic pouch and carefully cut or shred any pieces that are chunky. Once you’ve done that, I would suggest the stovetop method (about 5 minutes over medium heat) over the microwave suggestion.

Serve it with fresh ears of sweet corn and see if you can fool the carnivores in your home.
