Is it possible that I’ve found a meatless gyros that can fool my carnivore husband?
Introducing Viana Veggie Gyros – with just the right amount of spice and a great texture that actually had the mouth feel of meat.
You may recall that I gave a less than glowing review of Viana’s Kielbasa about a month ago. Viana’s Kielbasa is certainly worthy of another taste test in a different recipe. But for now, Tofurky is still my current Kielbasa champ.
Viana’s Veggie Gyros is another story entirely! I sautéed onions, red, green, and yellow bell peppers, fresh oregano, cumin, and garlic before adding the gyros “meat” and then stuffed the mixture in warm whole wheat pita bread. I served it with a side of hummus, a fresh green salad, and a delicious home made tzatziki sauce made with cucumber, Greek yogurt, lemon, dill, garlic, and sour cream. We ate out on our deck, enjoying the cool autumn evening, and were quite impressed with my efforts to replicate a street food favorite.
If you’re a carnivore, you probably salivate when you walk by the street vendor carving the roasted beef or lamb to make gyros. Next time you’re craving this delicious treat at home, consider giving my super easy meatless version a try!
