My husband I have a very bad habit of buying food products “on sale” thinking that I will eventually use them in one of my new dishes.
My advice is that a bargain ain’t a bargain if you end up tossing it.
Case in point. I found gorgeous baby eggplant at the farmers market – eggplant parmesan seemed like a logical next step.
Bill had found some lovely smoked mozzarella that was on sale a while back and I knew we had some Daiya shredded mozzarella in my extra fridge to use for my vegan experiments. Seemed like a marriage made in Heaven – I could do a vegan version of this well-loved dish, and also one with a smokey, meaty emphasis.
Each product was (well) past its sell by date, but being adventurous, I thought I might still be able to use them tonight.
Thank goodness we did a taste test first! After our test test, I asked my patient, loving, and long-suffering husband to go to the store for some fresh mozzarella . . . which he did with a glad heart. I can’t tell you how happy I am that I didn’t ruin my delicious eggplant parm by using a cheese that was sour or “off”.
Please don’t buy more than you can use and pay attention to dates on the products you buy. Your food will taste better and your family will be happier with your results!
